Are you using your press brake bending dies the right way?How you use your tooling has a direct impact on product accuracy, die longevity, and shop efficiency. Even experienced operators can make small mistakes that lead to big problems. Based on years of experience, CHAOERO has listed six frequent mistakes and how to avoid them—so you can save time, reduce costs, and stay productive.
Mistake 1: Using the Wrong Die Material
What Happens: Many users believe that harder means better, choosing materials rated above HRC50 without thinking. But harder dies are often more brittle. For example, bending 304 stainless steel with a T10 die can be more than twice as likely to crack than with a 42CrMo die.
What to Do: Always match your die material to the sheet metal you’re bending:
- For carbon steel: T8 or T10 works well.
- For stainless steel or aluminum: Use 42CrMo or Cr12Mo.
Heat Treatment Matters: A good die isn’t just about the metal—it’s also about proper heat treatment. Tempering (quenching + high-temp heating) gives dies both strength and flexibility. Final hardness depends on careful control of heat, time, and cooling.
Recommended Hardness Levels:
- HRC 48–55: Offers more toughness—ideal for thick or rough materials.
- HRC 55–60: Better wear resistance—perfect for large-volume production.

Mistake 2: Poor Setup and Installation
Problem 1: Skipping alignment or calibration can throw off your bends.
Solution: Use laser alignment tools to center your die accurately—within 0.1mm. Adjust the V-opening based on material. For example, a 1mm sheet should use a 5mm V-die.
Problem 2: Installing oversized dies on small machines. A 3-meter die on a 100-ton press can bend the rails or overload the hydraulics. Problem 3: Reusing the same V-die opening for all jobs. This can damage dies and cause inaccurate bends. Solution: Use this formula:
- V-width = Sheet Thickness × 6–8 (carbon steel)
- For stainless steel: use ×8–10
- For aluminum: use ×6–7 Example: 2mm carbon steel = V12; 2mm 304 SS = V16

Mistake 3: Skipping Bend Radius Calculations
What Happens: Some operators guess the bend radius and forget that different metals behave differently. For instance, bending 2mm aluminum with an R0.5 die may cause cracking.
What to Do: Use this rule: Bend Radius = Sheet Thickness × 1.5 (carbon steel). For more accuracy, use a special die to lower stress. CHAOERO tests all custom dies before shipping.

Mistake 4: Not Maintaining the Dies
What Happens: If dies are left dirty or untreated after use, they wear out faster. Fixing them later costs more.

- Daily: Wipe clean with kerosene and apply rust-prevention oil. Black coatings or sandblasting don’t replace regular care.
- Quarterly: After every 500 uses, use ultrasonic cleaning and inspect for defects.

Mistake 5: Ignoring Safety Rules
Problem 1: Removing guards or safety locks to speed up work can lead to serious hand injuries.
Solution: Train all workers on safety procedures. Always use certified tooling. Never modify the machine or the dies.
Problem 2: Two operators handling large parts out of sync, causing uneven force or dropped pieces.
Solution: For parts over 1.5 meters, use electric lifters. Add infrared safety grids on both sides of the press brake.

- Keep dies away from heat sources.
- Use a log system to track usage and maintenance.
